Three Snow January for New York’s Snow Removal Services

Snow Removal Services Scramble To Beat Storms

As the winter of 2024 unfolded, the United States found itself grappling with not one, but three formidable snowstorms. From the initial whispers of snowflakes to the aftermath that left cities blanketed in white, the journey of these storms was a testament to the resilience of communities,  It also highlighted the critical role played by snow removal services. In this article, we trace the path of the triple snowstorms, detailing their beginnings, progression across the United States, and the significant impact they had on Buffalo and New York City.

The Genesis of the Triade of Snowstorms

January 2024 began with meteorologists closely monitoring weather patterns that hinted at an unusual convergence of factors. First was a major disruption in the polar vortex.  This disruption is not uncommon, but when it occurs it pushes Arctic air down into the United States.  The larger the disruption, the further down into the continental US the cold air goes.  This disruption was comparatively weak but occurred lower in the atmosphere than normal.  This allowed it to have a more pronounced effect on the vortex than one occurring high in the vortex.

This was paired with an unusual El Nino pattern.  The current El Nino cycle has been running for the past seven “seasons” (a three-month period used by NOAH to track weather over years).  This El Nino has surpassed the normal five overlapping periods by two periods.  As it approaches its end, which is predicted to be in late spring, it is weakening and losing stability.

What started as a singular disturbance in the atmosphere soon evolved into four snowstorms, each building on the intensity of the previous one. The initial stages saw the three storms gaining strength in the northern regions before gradually making their way southward, then turning northeast.  A final storm came roaring out of Alberta, bringing snow to the northern Great Plains, then blowing over the Great Lakes and into New England.

Pacific Northwest Winter Wonderland

The first of the triple snowstorms began its journey in the picturesque landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.  Nicknamed “Winter Storm Finn”, this system hit as the nation entered the second week of January. States like Washington and Oregon witnessed the gentle descent of snowflakes, creating a serene winter wonderland. While the initial snowfall was met with admiration, it was merely a prelude to the more significant events that awaited.

As the storm moved eastward, it gathered momentum, leaving behind a trail of white landscapes in its wake. Cities and towns in the northern states, including Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota, experienced a winter transformation. Residents in these regions, accustomed to snow, braced themselves for the upcoming challenges, as the first storm set the stage for what was to come.

As the storm dipped into the South it left a wake of destruction.  The cold air from the northwest clashed with the warm, moist air of the southeast.  The result was an outbreak of tornadoes, the strongest of which were experienced in Florida.  In Panama City, FL residents watched helplessly as a water spout moved onto dry land, transforming into an EF3 tornado.

As the Nor’easter turned back northeast it brought high winds and light snow to the Mid-Atlantic states and New England.  New York City received a dusting of snow, while other areas around NYC reported a foot of the white stuff.

A Midwestern Blanket of White

Hot on the heels of the first storm, the second snowstorm descended upon the Midwest, covering the region in a thick blanket of snow. This system was nicknamed “Winter Storm Gerri” and it started across the US at the end of the same week.  States such as Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan found themselves in the grip of icy temperatures and relentless snowfall. The heartland of the United States became a snowy expanse, testing the preparedness of communities and snow removal services for the winter onslaught.

As the second storm progressed, it brought about disruptions in daily life. Schools closed, businesses adjusted their schedules, and residents sought solace in the warmth of their homes. Local authorities and snow removal services in the Midwest were put to the test, working diligently to keep roads clear and maintain a semblance of normalcy.  High winds exasperated the situation, driving snow in 80 MPH gusts across the High Prairie.  I-70 was closed from just outside Denver through to western Kansas.  New Mexico also reported wind gusts of 76 MPH and Oklahoma experienced snow drifts over 4 feet.

Unusual Events in Midwest and Flooding in New England

Chicago experienced some of the most rare weather phenomena during this storm.  Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel caught thundersnow on video.  The rare thunderstorm brings heavy snow instead of intense rain and is accompanied by characteristic thunder.  Frostquakes also shook parts of the Chicagoland area.  This is a weather-related situation where water underground is quickly frozen due to rapidly falling surface temperatures.  The expanding underground ice causes the soil and rock to crack.  This produces “booming” and shaking ground similar to an earthquake.

The Northeast felt the touch of this system, as well.  It brought snow to the Mid-Atlantic states with high winds.  As the storm continued out to sea it caused coastal flooding.  Historic flooding occurred in Portland, ME, breaking a record set in 1978.  Areas as far south as Long Island saw flooding, as well.

Strike Three: Northeastern Challenges Unfold

The third storm in the trilogy made its presence known particularly in the Northeastern part of the United States. New England, accustomed to winter weather, faced challenges as the snowfall intensified. States like Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont witnessed significant accumulations, leading to widespread disruptions in transportation and daily activities.

New York City, usually bustling with activity, felt the impact as the third storm approached. The city that never sleeps had to adapt quickly to changing weather conditions. The snow removal services in New York City faced a monumental task as they worked tirelessly to clear the snow-laden streets and sidewalks.

Snow Brings Happiness and Contention

After a prolonged “snow drought”, New Yorkers were torn as they relished the 1.2 inches of snow that fell in Central Park.  It was the first inch to fall in nearly two years!  The 1.6 inches that fell in the rest of the city caused widespread traffic issues, tempering their excitement.  Further south, Baltimore had almost five inches and Washington, DC saw just over four inches.

In Iowa, there were many frustrated pollsters as the winter weather affected turnout for the presidential caucuses.  Freezing temperatures had canceled campaign events leading up to the contests.  The football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins recorded the 4th coldest temperature for an NFL game.  Temperatures dipped to -4 °F at kickoff.

Buffalo Bears the Brunt
